I'm going out to see Rhombus and Taos tonight... was a tough call between that and seeing P-Money. It's a pity they clashed! But the gig won't even start until 10.30 and won't really take off until after eleven... which makes Saturday night seem so long....
Well last weekend was a total writeoff. The Battle of the Bands was just too slow to get going for my taste, I left around midnight... although I have to say the second act, the soloist with the guitar and the backing beat? That was neat. And then on Saturday night I went on the bus trip... oh god.
Beware of the bus-trip planned by a bus-trip company! It's just... god. Ok, you get in a bus that is blasting 80's music and decorated with a spray-painted santa claus on the window. Then a bunch of very drunken people are bused around a series of awful shitty little pubs in the suburbs with inspiring names like 'The Caledonian' and 'Papanui Sports Bar'. Everyone goes into the pub for 25 minutes, at the end of which time the driver appears in the doorway and toots an air horn to get everyone back on the bus.
Classy.
To make it better, they don't just have one bus trip a night. Oh no. They have like, five of the things, all hitting the same pubs at the same time. It's so organised, in fact, the bus company runs a sausage sizzle outside the pubs. So you have a horde of horribly pissed people (at, um, 9.30 in the evening?!) descending on these pubs in waves. The regulars are either unamused or frankly offensive.
The garden is good, however. The seedlings are doing well, except the tomatoes. They haven't bothered to sprout at all, not one, which makes me suspect I did something wrong at a crucial stage. I've started again with another tray.
I went over to Lyttleton today to do some painting. It was a whim that met with success; the first decent painting in 6 months or more! So I must try a similar technique this coming week and see if it was a fluke or if I'm finally off that style plateau.
The Solaa (and Ladi 6) gig on at the Civic last weekend was a great night... we left when the bar closed at 5! Great music, obviously, and also a nice crowd atmosphere with a mix of people. I really like it when the musicians stay around afterwards for a bit, I think it adds to the whole experience.
Also I got a nice t-shirt! (Now I keep wishing I'd bought two.)
Tonight it is the battle of the bands at the Jetset Lounge. I think a few people I know are going along to that one. Starts at 8pm and costs about $7 at the door, if anyone else is bored in the Chch tonight :) If you see me there, I'm the uncoordinated blonde who can't dance but attempts it enthusiastically. Come say hi!
I wish I were going out to the Earthdance but I just can't justify the trip - petrol and food and gear etc, not to mention the $30 ticket... I'll go on the bus-trip/pub-crawl with my flatmate instead I think!
Sock is about 4 weeks off from whelping. So far the pregnancy seems to be going smoothly. She has managed to con me into buying her steak mince instead of puppy food, so it shows her brain is in good order at the very least!
