Holey Teeth!

My teeth are holey and unblessed. Poor teeth. However I now have super-strong secret-squirrel toothpaste so perhaps that will help.

It is hot. My knees ache. I am preparing for decrepitude.

Bread is boring and stale, unless you buy it fresh every day, which is expensive. Or make it, which is also expensive. The dentist advised me to avoid acidic foods like soft drinks, fruit juice, and fruit in general. The EDS team advise me to eat 7+ servings of fruit/veges each day. Flavoured milk is full of sugar. Diet sweetners are tools of the devil. Too much carb is bad. Too much meat is bad. Battery farming is immoral, free-range chicken is exhorbitant. Fish oil is good, but fisheries are evil. Soy is great, except that upwards of 90% of world production is GM. Coffee, tea and chocolate exploit and poison people in third-world countries, or else you can pay $10 a packet at Trade Aid.

Pick your way through the minefield. La da dee, la da dah.

Oh I know - it's such a minefield with the food. I just try and avoid the really obvious ones like battery hen eggs etc. It is bad though, cos now people are ending up with such terrible allergies cos of all the crap we eat. My secretary's grandson is allergic to everything, including potatoes of all things!?!?

wow, I haven't heard of a potato allergy before. My little bro had a really severe allergy to tomatoes when he was a kid. I remember once watching him eat one and within about 2 minutes of it his face was all covered in red welts. He seems to have grown out of it though. My sister also had a bunch of allergies, to wheat and dairy and stuff as a kid, but also seems to have grown past it.

my dad used to get hives as a result of eating any one thing too often. like, he could have something for brekkie every day for a week and be fine and them BAM! had to change to something else. this isn't just fruit mind you - weetbix, cornflakes etc. what a pain.

i avoid too much fresh tomato and orange juice (cos acidity of them def seems to make my skin worse) but i'm generally gyah!! on most stuff.

mm.. my teeth are all happy since i bought sensodyne (sp?) no more acheys for me. eating cheese after meals is supposed to bath your teeth in calcium and be all good apparently. this is not a valid excuse for stealing 'grated up to go in dinner' cheese tho according to J.

the worst fruits for acid are the bella donna ones i think - so citrus, capscium, tomatoes. you could invest in a heavy gum-chewing habit?

ooh. i have the who moved my cheese book. my boss bought everyone at work a copy a year ago

When I took Hamish to be tested, egg potato and wheat were the most common allergies. Dairy follows along behind. So lots of people these days are avoiding spuds, just think no chips...

With regards to the dentist I think you'll be alright eating the acidic foods, but it's better if they are not on their own, like you have some fruit, then you have a piece of bread (or toast if it is slightly stale). Remember, water is not effective at diluting acid unless you have HEAPS of it. Or brush your teeth afterwards, most toothpastes are basic, especially the baking soda ones.

Don't use the dentist as an excuse not to eat foods that you are currently eating.

Generally dentists say that having sugary stuff is ok if you have it with other stuff, so flavoured milk is ok if you eat some wheet-bix with it, or something. But also remember that dentists are narrowmindedly focused on only one area of your health. I've know dentists who have laughed and said, "Ideally we would prefer it if people ate fewer but larger meals in a day but doctors recommend more but smaller meals,".

You can survive with bad teeth. Not so much with no food.

End of rant.

yeah, you're right - all except on one point that I always thought, too - about brushing your teeth after acidic foods.

DON'T DO IT! Acid makes your teeth more pourous. So if you brush your teeth after eating something acidic, you end up scrubbing away the enamel. That's also why you shouldn't brush your teeth if you throw up - it's better to wash your mouth out with a bit of bicarb + water.

I try. Food is just so confusing. I mean, is it better to buy horribly refined sugar in a paper packet, or unrefined sugar in a plastic bag? I couldn't work out which was the least evil to the environment so I ended up crying on the supermarket floor. Literally. How embarrassing...
