There's a wee gm plant, that will detect landmines. Its a great idea, but I wonder about the plant chosen. Arabidopsis is so small you can grow it to flowering inside a test tube, so how deep would a mine have to be before it would escape detection?
Posted by Toni at December 1, 2004 08:08 AMI guess since the NO2 gas will permeate the soil and rise to the surface, the roots should be able to pick up and respond to it even if the depth penetration is not great. And since it is a smallish plant that can be sown very closely together, I wonder if the roots would actually form a matt in the topsoil so you'd probably end up with splashes of red - if one plant failed, most likely its near neighbours wouldn't.
I do like the fact that this GM plant is only modified in its own genes (i.e. they've knocked out genes and chemical pathways rather than added in foreign ones)
Thanks
