Dunedin Cobb & Co / Lawcourts Backpackers is the worst backpackers I've ever stayed in. It is so bad it's funny. I stayed there about a week ago and I took photos, it was so unbelieveably bad.
The only access was up 4 flights of stairs (entry over the hotel rubbish area).
The stairwell lights weren't working.
They only had one key for our room (for 4 people) so they gave us a key to another room (where other people were staying), reasoning that we could leave our room unlocked and just use the keys to lock the lower door.
The room had one 15-watt bulb.
The shower taps were reversed - hot is cold, cold is hot
There were no locks on the toilet door, no soap or handtowels in the dispensers
There was a large hole punched in the wall, exposing the wiring for the lightswitch.
There were cobwebs on the windows, dirt and hair on the floor.
But the really bad stuff:
The smokestop door isn't labelled
I couldn't open the windows to access the fire escapes
And a set of double bunks were blocking a labelled fire door!
I'm going to get in touch with the Dunedin fire department, I think. How bad would I feel if that deathtrap went up in flames and killed someone?
