Call Me Cynical

but has anyone else noticed the new McDonald's ads since the trans-fat news broke?

It's a clever campaign. It makes no claims about anything other than "McDonald's Fries Are Cooked In 100% Vegetable Oil" but it somehow makes it sound like a good thing.

IT IS A VERY VERY BAD THING.

Let me put it like this. The FDA has an acceptable dietary level of *acrylamide* for goodness' sake. For them to declare no acceptable dietary level of trans-fat, and move within 12 months to change the labelling laws, you've got to understand: This is really, really serious

Switch to butter. For pity's sake, I'm screwed in head over food and this has convinced me to switch from lite margarine to butter. And remember the analogy from that dr: it's like sand in a clockwork mechanism. Your body cannot process this artificial fat, and it simultaneously destroys good cholesterol and raises bad cholesterol.

What's the bets that partially hydrogenated vegetable oil is revealed as the missing link between processed food and the soaring rates of obesity? You can drink flipping olive oil and not get that obese. But since trans-fat cannot be metabolised... you can see how it would toxify the old system pretty quick.

Get on to Annette King, the minister for Food and Health. Her email is: aking@ministers.govt.nz. Ask her what action New Zealand is going to take over this threat to public health...

As is typical in science, there are two schools of thought (minimum)

NZ MCD's apparently have never used the oil that's getting American McD's in trouble. NZ and Oz use sunflower oil which is less of the badness, but america has 2 many McDs and not enuff sunflowers. geez. do i sound like an advert for them or what?

i kinda like that ad - i'm trying to convince J to refer to me as his 'woman-thing' *l*

Yep, that's the way the science goes... but I have to say, in this instance, if the FDA is taking such drastic measures and pissing off the enormous and powerful food lobbyists, I think it's serious.

I mean, look at how long it took them to ban vioxx and celebrex. The FDA is so political they don't want to annoy BIG FOOD or BIG DRUG.

I don't know about the US/NZ McD's thing, but it's not the type of oil that matters (sunflower, canola etc), it's the hydrogenation process. Hydrogen is pumped into the oil with a metal catalyst, which makes the oil stable at room temperature and able to withstand multiple heating/cooling, which is necessary for deep-frying.

I doubt very much if NZ has found a way to use non-hydrogenated vegetable oil in its fries, because the USA food world would be beating a path to our door prior to 2006...
