T3G - You Will Be Assimilated

You know, I really don't like those Telecom T3G ads. There's something to me quite disturbing about that poor little boy saying how fast he gets through life - isn't childhood the only time most people get to stop and explore the possibilities of roses?

I know it's kind of cute to see kids in grown-up clothes. I just think it's sad to see a 6 year old describing his frantic vision of being adult. Faster, faster, more and more, email on the run and even sleeping fast. Sounds like hell to me. Aren't all these wonderful inventions supposed to free us from the rat race?!

What on earth are we rushing toward?

(also, imagine how antiquated those phones will be by the time those kids are 21... "I can see the future... in BETA!")

Is anyone else not looking forward to the days of videophones. So much for ringing in sick (Hmm you don't look very sick) or running out of the shower to answer the phone.... Even having to see clients face to face. Voice alone is sometimes more than enough over the phone. Though I guess less will feel comfortable abusing an anonymous person when they have to look them in the eye.

Oh god yes, as soon as video phones become the norm, expect to see a rise in "video-phone-wear", that are basically humourous masks and costumes you can wear while using your video-phone to disguise the fact that you're rolling your eyes, doodling, buck naked or any of the other things we can currently do while chatting without the other person realising what an anti-social type we are!

A friend of mine has a theory that video phones will never catch on, because there is no practical need for them. Can anyone think of a genuine purpose for the average person, that cannot be acheived by pxt? Will it just be a toy for people who have run out of things to spend money on?
