Moral Dilemma

I am sitting here watching Henry play with a mouse. An actual, live, quite small baby mouse that has got a big gash in its side and is squeaking. My dilemma is that I want Henry to grow up to be a good mouser, and this is his first (to my knowledge) and also he caught it in the kitchen cupboard, so Deb will be very happy. I just wish Henry didn't look like he was enjoying it so much.

... oh good, it's dead now.... oh no, not quite. It's twitching. gross.

Um right, on to the Friday theme. A Mission in Life.

I don't have a mission in life yet but I am actively trying to find one. I want to live the idealistic life I believed in as a teenager. I'm thinking (don't laugh, and it's only been thought over the last week or so) about maybe becoming a teacher. Primary school, 7 - 10 maybe. And then going and getting a job in a low decile school in the back of beyond somewhere that has a hard time retaining teachers, and settle down in a small rural community for 10 years and give the kids everything I've got. Literacy feels vital to solving most social ills. And heaven knows I complain enough. It would be good to actually do something to help solve the problem at the roots, even in a small way.

On a broader scale, I want a meaning to my life. Something I am passionate about and can make a real, even if modest, difference to. A missionary, without the god bit but with the good works, sacrifice and passion. At the moment it feels like literacy, because reading means freedom and new ideas.

lol I said not to laugh!

Henry is flinging the mouse corpse around the room. Yummy.

The dogs are crying to be let outside.

Here is yesterday's writing effort:

once I was a girl who
had a
vasectomy
mildly confused
I thought I was
next to me
now I have learnt
as eventually we do
I was hiding in
the closet
right behind you

the mice-dilemma is a tricky one. espech when they crunch it all over the carpet.

the worst is when u have a lot of ppl over (including some u don't know v well) and ur darling kitten starts bringing in monarch butterflies! it's like, ok, monarchs are pretty and all, but they only have a 1 day life span anyway, and once she's had it in her mouth, it's not really looking too good for recommencing flying anyways. the worst is that Fred gets bored of them and u find these twitching wingless butterfly bodies around the house. bleuch

Monarchs live longer than one day I thought (goes to check it) here:

"The life span of the adult Monarch varies, depending on the season in which it emerged from the pupa and whether or not it belongs to a migratory group of Monarchs. Adults that emerged in early summer have the shortest life spans and live for about two to five weeks.

Those that emerged in late summer survive over the winter months. The migratory Monarchs, which emerge from the pupa in late summer and then migrate south, live a much longer life, about 8-9 months."

that's from an enchanted learning page (http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/butterfly/species/Monarch.shtml) so it's pretty reliable.

I knew some of them lived 8 months of so because how else would they migrate in awesome ways. That and there's a tree near my parent's house that has monarchs on it all year round...Of course, once it's been in her mouth I don't know they *would* be able to fly again.

I used to hate when I saw my cat with a live mouse. I don't mind so much the dead trophies that were brought to me, but to see them playing is an awful thing. Once I rescued a mouse from my cat and it died of fear anyway.

heh. learn something everyday. the weird thing is, i find lots of them round, including caterpillars, and i can't find a swan plant anywhere *shrugs*

yeah there must be a secret swan-plant grove somewhere around the wellington region, cos same observation: no swan-plants, many butterflies.
