Had the new neighbour's boy over today so had a happy productive day. Arapeta and c played together really well, and so I didn't have to be chief entertainment officer and got to do other things, including playing with the baby.
First day at a new school tomorrow, should be interesting at least. I feel seriously underprepared, but I have discovered that briefings from teachers are pretty useless, and I need to find out from the kids what they have actually done.
Weekend of solo mumming went pretty well all told, as long as i don't expect to get anything done and have low expectations of having any time to myself they are okay. Otherwise I get terribly frustrated with getting nothing done for myself...

Addmitted, not everyone wants 6 kids, reproducing so regularly that for 14 years she had at least 2 kids under the five... But with families breaking up, kids are tending to grow up without brothers and sisters close to their age.
Number one - how do these kids learn how to handle a baby if/when they have one. If your entire experience of babies is murmuring "oh, it's um - small and cranky." then a newborn is likely to be a shock.
In fact, I think most people should have to parent a puppy for a year before they're allowed to reproduce. Puppies cry, they shit all the time in unexpected places, you have to feed them right and watch for signs of illness - but it's not quite such a tradgedy when a puppy is shaken to death or reversed over.
But I also think that more and more solo-kid families are probably contribuiting to the childhood obesity crisis. They don't have a ready-made set of friends, enimies and allies that multi-kid households have. When they come home from school, they get to play by themselves, or play with the TV or computer. And as more kids are raised in the inner city, it's too dangerous for them to play unsupervised at anytime. Leads to a lot of physical inactivity.
