Tuesday's just another word for nothing much to blog

My livejournal has stuff in it that I haven't written here. Such is the excitement and insanity of my daily life.

I have been toying with doing a body image entry, but today isn't the day. I am too warm by the heater and I had leftover risotto for lunch.

Watch this space. My thoughts on body image (for girls, I don't know how boys function) coming soon.

In the meantime here's a nice link for you. For those of you who are being foresighted about my upcoming birthday (in six weeks and two days) I would like one of the Corporation tshirts. Women's babydoll style, size small. Thanks.

I am toying with doing one of those amazon.com wishlists, but I doubt anyone would use it. Maybe I'll just mention potential presents on here as I think of them. (Striped legwarmers).

About my birthday. My party theme will be dark fairytale. I am working on the invitations now, as they will be funky pieces of book art. Lee says not to invite too many people as our apartment isn't really *that* big. So I can't invite all of you, sorry.

Now I just have to figure out a way of making myself a kick-ass dress of the Evil Queen variety and spend no money doing it. Might be tough. Maybe I'll rent again, but then I'd have to go through the unspeakable agony of parting with gorgeous dress again.

Hmmmm. Will think about this.

Mmmm.. lovely weekend

My weekend was full of nothing much. It was great. On Saturday I slept in and finished Xenocide. Seraph and his fiance interrupted my warring Civ3 with a lovely cookie delivery visit,

Then we went out to the scrapbooking shop, Real Groovy (bought Battle Royale, Volcano High and 10 things I hate about you) and food shopping and refilling the gas bottle for the heater.

Saturday night was Civ3 and watching DVDs. Sunday I finished my Civ3 game with a cultural victory. It was mostly because I decimated the French and took all their cities. My culture wasn't that great but it was HUGE. heh.

I'm gonna go for space race victory next. Go me!

I had people over for storytime. I felt pretty weird about it. I had a lot of misgivings when it actually came down to reading to people and I felt much more nervous and weird than I ever have in front of the strangers who come to storytime in the library. I guess because I was reading to people I like and admire, I didn't want to embarass myself or come off as corny or a weirdo children's librarian forcing things on her friends.

Once I was actually reading I felt better, although I think the funnier books went down better than Round Trip, which is just neat pictures, no real story or anything. I guess I'll do it again, I mean, people seemed to enjoy it and Matt and Debbie said 'Next time, we'll bring books" so that seems positive.
There will be more Rosemary Wells next time!

A bunch of people left to see Bourne Supremacy but the ret of us stayed in the heated apartment and played Trivial Pursuit. Debbie won after a while. There was much hilarity and clue giving. Great game. I was only one pie piece behind.

Watched some Family Guy last night. Was funny. Back at work today. Feel stangely engergised and upbeat.

Thinking long and hard

Is not what has been happening in my head today.

I saw some rhythmic gymnastics this morning, man those gals are bendy! It's like watching aliens freak out to music. heh. I love it a lot. I hope to watch the ribbon rounds tonight, that's always been my favourite.

Do you think the tigers that mauled the guy in Wellington zoo last year got sick from the sudden change in meat, or do you think they now have a taste for human flesh and are just waiting for their next snack opportunity?

My war is continuing. I managed to make peace with America briefly, but then they attacked the Netherlands who are under my thumb. I mean, a tiny nation that I have befriended and then I had to be at war too. Darn mutual protection pacts. The problem is that all the cities I have that used to belong to America get sad that I'm at war with their mother country.

I am expanding out into France quite nicely. I love my elite infantry guys, they rock. Plus, now I have saltpepper and dye resources that I didn't have before.
Even better, I just discovered flight. Tonight will be war and rythmic gymnastics. Who else can claim such a Friay night?

I am such a geek. I mean, man. Computer games and watching weird aliens dancing with ribbons. Some people go clubbing, but not me! I am too geeky.

Tomorrow I am going to try and buy Battle Royale for $20 on DVD. Oh yes, it shall be mine. I also have to go to the scrapbooking shop and swap the album pages I bought last week for some that actually fit into my album.

Roll on 5.30!

War

I was at war with the Americans for a long time. Then they got sick of losing their cities to me, and we made peace.

France was still at war with the Americans though, and since I own the land in between them I had a lot of agressive French troops moving through my land. I told the French to get out and they declared war on me. I figure that's OK. I'll send my armed infantry in and destroy their archers and that's more cities for me.

Outside of Civ3 though, nothing much is happening. Pole vaulting last night was neat.

It's sunny outside today.

I am getting through Xenocide slower than I want to because of the tempting Olympics which must be watched.

I am very sleepy but I heard on the news this morning that commercial surrogacy is being outlawed. What's up with that?

It seems kind of unfair, I mean, if there are people willing to pay a lot of money for a baby and there's a woman who is willing to be pregnant for financial gain what's the problem?

I guess it would make it easier for gay couples to have babies and that's all y'know, destroying the family unit. According to certain frightening extreme fundamentalists.

Mullination

I am very sad I didn't go to the Pro-Civil Union rally. Every time I read that the Destiny's church people outnumbered the colourful people I'm like, man, I could have made them one person stronger.

I think the civil union bill should go through. For my own selfish reasons: Lee doesn't believe marriage is a relavant constitution for us. Maybe I can convince him that civil union is for us.

That's all.

There are some wonderful blog entries about this issue: Chinashop, Beautiful Monsters, Justleft and Sokky's lj, which spurned more arguing than was maybe intended.

Good idea or bad idea?

I've been mulling over an idea for a wee while now, and I thought I'd chuck it out there and see what y'all think.

Would any of you like to come to a storytime aimed at adults? There are heaps of awesomely funny/sweet/lovely/wonderful/moving picture books that I know adults enjoy and I'd like to share them. The best way of sharing books like this is to read them aloud. I have experience in this, so I was wondering....

Is this something you'd be into or not?

Please give me your opinion either way, I really want to know.

:)

Monday Monday (da-da, da da da daaaa!)

My weekend was restful, and I am still sick. Poot.

On Saturday I visited my parents. I caught the train and it was really nice to just sit back and read. I am reading Xenocide because I really want to know what happens to my lovely Ender.

My parents are well and good. We went to the Bendon factory and I bought some ugly underwear. Funny how the pretty stuff is almost always flimsy and pointless, and the stuff that's really useful and needed is just so ugly. For those who are curious as to the nature of my ugly underwear purchase it's a brown padded bra which is particularly pointy and odd. Still, very useful for wearing under filmy clothes and costumes.

After that we went to the Brown Sugar Cafe and I had an awesome peanut butter and choc chip cookie. Yum for the Brown Sugar Cafe!

Then when I got back into Wellington I found out that we had been invited to Seraph's house for board games. I play again the Princes of Florence! Unfortunately my cold-addled brain, the warm warm fire and some inspired playing by the others conspired to make me come last. With a score that is normally quite respectable. Must rethink my POF strategy. But later, when my brain works better.

Yukky rainy windy weather.

Sunday I slept in, watched silly TV, played Civ3, saw Macbeth, played Civ3, watched silly TV and went to sleep. A day of most noble achievement.

Macbeth was alright. We saw it at Circa and I had trouble understanding what Macbeth was saying. And Lady Macbeth's costume was so long that she had to hold onto her surcoat the whole time so she didn't trip on it. It was really annoying to watch her act really well with her face and voice but her hands were always gripping the surcoat. Annoying. She tripped on it once and caught herself so she didn't fall, and at one point it got caught in a gap of the stage. Poorly designed costumes if you ask me.

....Actually I really liked the costumes, but the tripping and catching is poorly designed something. Production? Stage? I dunno.

The witches were very cool, although Lee thought one of them was overly RADA. Like, "I'm *acting* now! See me *act*!"

The fight choreography was pretty poor, and I nearly laughed out loud when the little boy playing Fleance gripped his father's sword by the blade. I had to sort of snorfle to myself and I'm sure it was distracting to Seraph's fiance.

Still, for the discounted price of $15 it was a grand production and since it's the only time I've ever seen Macbeth performed I enjoyed it a lot. I especially liked the sleepwalking scene and Birnam wood coming to Dunsinane. Those are wonderful scenes and they were performed wonderfully.

Civ3 is going pretty well. I keep being at war with the Americans. (Ironically enough). I am aiming to win by being the largest Civ in the world. You have to get 60% of the world population and I'm at %42 or so...I could try and beat up my rivals but I get sick of losing units.

Did you know that Cavalry will win against a Crusader every time, but a Rifleman will only win against one, and then die?

cold progression status report.

Niggly mucus in throat makes me cough quite frequently. Nose periodically blocks up then requires blowing.

Head stuffed with playdough. Logical thought possible, motivation lacking, asbtract thought exhausting.

As such I shall blog about how the Nasty Vulture Ladies have begun to train their young to be nasty vulture children.

The Nasty Vulture Children have been schooled to come up to the desk and ask to see the DVDs that have been returned but aren't yet on the shelves, this means the DVDs that have been returned in the last five minutes.

When we check and there aren't any they don't believe us. The Nasty Vulture Children don't like the hundreds of videos and DVDs on display, they want the fresh carrion, like Nasty Vulture Mummy eats. They suspect us of hoarding the best DVDs behind the desk out of reach. I guess they think we make big piles of the coolest DVDs and then sleep on them, like the Library Dragons we are.

These NVC also have particular stamps that are their favourites. They *have* to have Thomas the Tank Engine, for example. If that stamp isn't on offer, they demand it in an increasingly loud and annoying squawk. There will be tears and tantrums if the correct stamp isn't applied to the Nasty Vulture Claw.
~ I have met one in particular who likes having stamps so much he gets stamps and then licks his hands until the stamps aren't there anymore. Then he gets more stamps. I would'nt allow this kind of repulsive behaviour myself, but then I am not the mother of a small vulture.

Then there are the children who have somehow been taught (and who can guess who taught them?) that if they give something up, they will never get it back. With these kids the library is quite a problem, because think about it. In a library when you have found the book/video/DVD/magazine you want you then *give it to a librarian to scan*.

So, if you have found an exceptionally important Thomas the Tank Engine book (for example) and you believe that once you stop touching it you will never get it back, you're not about to hand it over to some librarian are you?

Then, when your Nasty Vulture Mummy pries it out of your little hands and gives it to said librarian, what is your best course of action?

You guessed it. Scream for all you are worth. Scream as if your heart had been torn out and shown to you. Scream as if you could break all the windows in the building if you just got loud enough.

.
My ears are still ringing.

home sick

from work today. Yesterday while at work I got a cold. I sneezed and I snozed and I blew my nose.

I went out at lunchtime for cookies (yesterday) and got the new Empire with has a free FHM with it. From August 2003. What's up with that? I guess they had a bunch of stock lying around and figured that movie buffs like to look at girls in the buff.

I can't really get over how the whole mag is so boy-centric. It's the opposite/equivalent of Cleo. FHM is Cleo for boys. That's my revelation for today.

I hardly slept last night because I kept sneezing and blowing my nose and I still couldn't breathe. This is why I didn't go to work. The cold itself is bad but not awful and probably if I'd had a normal sleep I'd feel OK.

As it is I got to watch Dr Phil and the gymnastic girls team rotation and that was fun. I've been playing Civ3 and not quite getting the energy to do anything useful. *sigh* I just want to sleep all afternoon but I think I have a better chance of sleeping tonight if I stay up.

Might do some housework or baking if I can bear to unwrap from my duvet of warm. I really want cookies so I might manage it. I can tell you're breathless with the excitement of it all.....

What I did in my Film Fest vacation

Ok, so I didn't blog about this at the time except to say that I went to the art gallery.

A few weeks ago I went to the art gallery by myself and I was freaked out by the art.

Normally art doesn't scare me. I have quite a lot of experience with art history and doing art myself and studied it all through high school so I like to think I am past the point of being scared of it.

Not so. Installation art that you have to walk into is freaking scary stuff.

In particular there's an installation upstairs in Wellington art gallery. It's there *right now* although not for much longer since the exhibition is ending. I can't remember what it's called or the name of the artist, but it's like a little wooden building that you have to walk into. Inside it is like a prison. On the left is a projected moving image of an idyllic landscape, on the right is a glass window that you can look into and see the artist lying on the floor. (It's not literally the artist, but a realistic dummy wrapped in a blanket.)

Seeing the human form freaked me out. I steeled my nerves and went around the corner and there at a computer terminal was another "person"! This was a matronly prison guard reading messages from the artist. Basically I was waiting for the scary fake person to start moving and possibly kill me. There was a door to the main gallery just past her though, so I gingerly edged past and escaped out the back. I checked first that there were no more freaky fake people waiting just outside to freak me out more.

There weren't.

and that's my scary art story. God knows how I'd cope with a wax museum.

Freeeezing Tuesday

Last night was the last Changeling game. Jarratt summed it up nicely in his blog which you can read here. What is the opposite of disappointing? I guess, satisfying and climactic in this case.

My favourite bit was when my character's elderform manifested and he turned into a drake midair. (Rescuing the woman who may be his one true love? Maybe? That's a story for another time I feel.) I think he would have turned into a light drake, although the silver drake we met was way cool...and fire drake is clearly already taken.

Civ 3 continues to absorb my interest. My Celtic game is going pretty well. I have nearly got the largest civilisation and I'm being a bit of a bully about it too. I got a scientific leader dude yesterday and used him to complete Leonardo's workshop way early. Awesome.

However, I have determined not to play it again tonight. Might go to a quiz night with Lee's folks since my Gamer Boyz don't seem to be coming over. (I feel just like a local God when I'm with the Boyz) Of course, my introducing Margiepuggle to the group last week I can't really call 'em my Boyz anymore. Hum.

Birthday party planning has commenced. I am leaning toward the theme of 'twisted fairytales' but I am also tempted by 'alternate reality' and 'story book characters' and even 'space cowboy'. Any thoughts? Bear in mind that I need a theme that allows me to dress in a big bouffy dress.

OMG! Best thing ever = beef stew.

No wait. Best thing ever = coconut buns + Fruits Basket + red San Pellegrino drink + chocolate.

Awesome.

Yum Cha is awesome

My weekend wasn't as empty as I had hoped...On Saturday I saw Lee's niece and we made her laugh a lot by 'flying' her on her belly on my exercise ball. It was very cute.

Then we bought a tv to go into our bedroom so I can watch the Olympics. (Our VCR stopped working, so I can't watch via the projector.) Lee hooked the playstation up to it as well so he can play on that when I have roleplaying.

Other stuff happened. Went to Chelle and Jase's to play CSI board game which isn't very well designed as it turns out. Had Hell pizza for tea and watched some Olympics and then Dark Water, which gets into the creepiness much sooner than I remembered.

Yesterday Lee and I went to Yum Cha with my sister and her friends, and it was completely awesome. I loved it, but I ate too much. My favourite things were bbq pork buns (steamed or baked) and coconut buns. Coconut buns are the best new thing I've had in a while. Giffy gave me one before we went to the ballet the other week and it was good, but dry and a bit hard. Fresh coconut buns are warm and the cocnut goo is squishy and the bun is sticky and soft. *drools*. I want more coconut buns.

Then PhotoMatt took Giffy and I too a studio and we posed for him in our Angelic Layer costumes. I am looking forward to getting the prints back...and I also need to get more ink for my printer. Hum. Not enough money, too many things to spend money on.

Had a quiet evening of Civ3 last night. I gave up my Japanese game as I was losing badly and started again as the celts. I am being warlike and attacky. Let's see how that works out for me.

302 entry! Woohoo!

I wonder if anyone will give me chocolate for having 302 blog entries?

Seems unlikely.

Elric did give me a gingerbread man on Tuesday and it had chocolate on it and sprinkles and pebbles for eyes. I had a cheerful one. Elric had a particularly angry looking one-eyed one.

My weekend is much desired. I am counting down the hours til the end of work. (Less than 4 now...) I have a brand new scrapbooking magazine at home for perusal, but I won't get to it tonight. Chelle's drinks are tonight. We gave her the awesomest present ever (for Chelle): a CSI board game. Oh the appropriateness.

Was talking to Seraph's fiance, Zephfi and Chelle last night about shows like SVU. (Special Victims Unit.) I have ranted about this kind of thing before but I just don't get why people want to watch shows that are based around sexual violence and child molestation. I'm like, that stuff is bad. By perpetuating it on TV and we almost kind of making it not so bad?

Ok, so the shows are about the people who track down and convict the sexual criminals and peadophiles, but still. Why have that premise? Why not make it a regulark, run of the mill murder show?

The only murder mystery show I ever watched regularly was Jonathan Creek. What is it about English TV that is so much better that the American stuff? Plus, mostly the show was about how weirdly intuitive and clever Jonathan was...less about the murders that sometimes occured, more about the way in which he'd solve it in about 20 minutes and then let Caroline puzzle it out with the viewers.

Aaaahhh I miss that show. I'd love to own it on DVD.

That was a disconnected rant. Thanks for joining us.

Wind makes kids crazy

Watched an episode of Teen Titans last night and loved it. Lee got bored afetr about five minutes but was told firmly to shoosh. After that we watched a very funny bit with that rude dog puppet off late night TV. He was making fun of the people queuing outside to see Star Wars episode two.

I feel guilty about laughing at other people's geekiness, but then I know plenty of people laugh at *my* brand of geekiness. Also, when you are performing in costume on the street the scenes from Episode one while it plays on a tv nearby you are setting yourself up for a bit of ridicule.

Uhm. Might write up Metal Opera on the weekend, since Morgue is so keen. I can't be bothered yet though. Nearly at the end of Speaker for the Dead. I know a bunch of the piggies' secrets and I feel happy about that. (Just wish they were called something nicer than piggies.)

My throat feels sore, like I'm coming down with something. Giffy's hayfever comment yesterday probably explains the sneezing though.

Extra-Lucky 300th entry!

Hey I got 300 entries! Woot!

I won Civ3 last night. I achieved a cultural victory, which means all my rivals love me because of my awesome culture. It had a picture of me (Isabella of Spain) wearing red with lipstick kisses all over her face, and all my rivals are surrounded by red love hearts and dreaming about me.

Awesome.

I think I have a cold. I can't seem to stop sneezing. Bah. I am also very very sleepy.

Last night we played Metal Opera and it was crazy fun, like being at Mega-Roleplaying weekend. I laughed and screamed and lost my voice partially.

Since 300th entry is like a festival celebration I don't need to write anything interesting. I'll just bathe in the awesomeness of my cultural achievements.

livejournal entry

Over on the livejournal there's been talk of silly things that scare us. Here's mine. lj users, you've read this already:

Stick insects are the bane of me.

Basically I am scared of them because:
1.)They are creepy looking, like alien invaders.
2.) They can go from motionless to running *really fast* in no time at all.
3.) They might cling onto me.

This all started because when I was a rich kid my mum grew orchids. The orchids had there own hothouse which was seperate from the other glass plant-growing building in our garden. The two buildings had a gap of about a foot between them and in this space grew blackberries.

I looooove blackberries, so when they were ripe I'd go and stick my arm in the gap and pick 'em. One time when I was doing this I was looking at the blackberry plant and thinking about how I love the berries and picking them with one hand and then my vision shifted. Suddenly I saw that as well as the blackberry vine there were like, a billion stick insects.

It is very scary when you think you are alone with the blackberries and then it turns out there are a billion stick insects watching you. From 5 cms away. I was very very scared and I have hated stick insects ever since.

I even know why there a billion stick insects right there, right then. They were meeting so they could plot how to freak me out and eventually ruin my life. No doubt they elected some kind of leader and all the encounters I have had with stick insects since were outlined that day.

Still don't think stick insects are evil? Talk to Seraph. He has the quintessential encounter with the stick insect of doom story.

chasing the clouds away, on my way to where the air is cleeeeeeeeear!

Oh won't you tell me how to get, how to get to Something-or-other st?

Heh. Discussion about superhero movies cropped up on yesterday's entry after Seraph said he didn't like Hellboy. Some interesting stuff, but I think I mostly agree with Jarratt, all superhero movies are not the same, and should not be considered in the same way. Of course, that might not be what he meant when I think about it. I just know that he and I are about the only people who liked The Hulk so I'll stick with that.

Today is sunny and yesterday was warm and I think spring might actually be on the way. It wasn't pitch black when I drove home last night, I think the days might be getting longer again. Hooray!

I am getting to the end of my Civ3 game. I think I will win by score, as no matter how much I bribe the Mayans they hate me, so I can't win by diplomacy. Also the Vikings dislike me cause of that war I had with them where I took five of their cities and heaps of slave workers. Yeah. I wanna finish the game but I won't get a chance tonight since my gaming Boyz are coming around.

I am really enjoying Speaker for the Dead. I think it's a really good extrapolation from Ender's Game. I mean progression not extrapolation, really. Anyway. It's cool. I like the way the most important things in the story are the people and the relationships and the mysteries, not the cool science. I especially like the bit where Ender does some faster-than-light travel and they explain it by saying that nobody knows how it works.

Awesome.

The thing that normally turns me off sci-fi is the excessive descriptions of made-up-science which is both boring and wanky. I can't cope with the Anne Maccaffrey dragon books for a similar reason: far too much time spent describing how the Pern society works and the politics and everything. I can understand why she writes it. (She made up a whole world and it's neat that she figured out all this stuff about it.) I can also understand why that would appeal to a bunch of people. (We think Pern is neat and we want to live there.) But for me it's annoying and self-indulgent writing. I'd rather read something with a good story.

OK, I know I'm being harsh but the one Pern book I read really pissed me off. *shudders at the thought*.

J.K. Rowling invented a whole world and society that has heaps of detail but she doesn't waffle on and on about it. You get hints of the level of detail through what people say and especially scenes like Harry visiting the ministry of magic. You can see that there's other things going on but nothing is said that doesn't need to be for the story.

Phew.

Ok, please don't scream at me if you're an Anne Maccaffrey fan. This is just how *I* feel. It doesn't really mean anything.

Monday morning

I dreamed about work. Specifically I was doing class visits on the gorgeous beach right outside the library. I wish there really was a beach at my library, that'd be cool.

Saw Hellboy again on the weekend, and still love it. You gotta see something like that at the Embassy, they have their bass levels craked so high it vibrates the floor and you really experience the booms and crashes.
I may be suffering from comic snobbiness but I put Hellboy in a different box in my head to Spiderman, X-Men and the dreaded Daredevil. Mostly other people seem to be grouping them together under 'generic superhero/comix movie'. I'm all like nah, it's totally different! Hellboy is printed by Image after all. It's a different company people!

Yeah, it's comic book geekery for sure.

Sat in the delightful sun in Fidel's yesterday and met Matt who is going to take photos of Giffy and me for a costumey assignment. Should be fun!

Bah, have to go to work now.

Glad I crashed the wedding

Giffy mentioned singstar again and now I have various songs from it stuck in my head. I've found that Daniel Bedingfield always segues into Wind Beneath my Wings in my head. Not sure if it could in real life since I don't know about writing music or bridges or anything, but that's how it is in my head.

I rather like being sent to Tauranga by work. I went on three planes and they were all different sizes. The smallest was yesterday evening Tauranga to Auckland. We were on this needlenosed 18 seater with no overhead lockers..there was a seat on either side of the centre aisle and you could look ahead into the cockpit and see through the windscreen. It was very exciting and since none of us were rockstars we didn't crash!

After that we went on a 737 to Wellington and it seemed ridiculously large and luxurious. It had little video screens that whir down out of the ceiling and show you Aire New Zealand ads and the safety stuff. Cute!

Tauranga reminded me of Napier and Taupo. I was only there a day and a bit though, so that's a generalisation. I bought five books. Once of them is a second hand hardback copy of Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card. I started reading it on the planes yesterday.

The children's librarian conference was great. Lots of lovely catering.

Lee keeps coming in and talking about undies. How helpful.

totoro totoro

My Neighbour Totoro is a lovely movie.

I am a bit like Dubbya Bush, I am in the middle of an interesting war in Civ3, but I have stopped for now. I can play some more in the morning after packing for Tauranga.

I am flying out midday. Do you think they'll give me lunch on the plane? I need some candies to suck on while I'm flying so my ears don't freak out too much.

I get paid at midnight yay!

Blah blah blah.

I want to be somebody famous, and I want to be somebody great.

If Chelle had been a physio like she wanted to when she was a teenager, I could be getting mates rates. Hmmm. I wonder if my mocking her about only wanting to be a physio so she could alleviate cute cricketer's groin strain had anything to do with her change of plans?

Sometimes I think I could be doing something more worthwhile, but then I get to supply a bandaid to a paper-cut victim 4 year old and stop his crying with stamps, and then I think maybe it's OK. I guess if I'm helping kids to read that's worthwhile right?

Of course some days it's all issuing videos and giving stamps to demanding kids. *sigh* I need a vocation.

....and another vacation.

My neck is nearly better, but it's not all fixed yet. I can't get over how long it takes to heal something that is not even a direct injury. By direct I mean no-one whacked me in the neck with a plank or anything.

Lee is reading Lemony Snicket and enjoying the humour. I love Lemony Snicket, so I am pleased. Those of you who haven't read it ought to. Some adults I know find it an annoying style to read because he is forever using long words and then defining them. I find this very funny because the definitions are humourous.

First day back not so bad

I met Tessa Duder today. It was an anti-climax since she arrived just before her scheduled talk, spent over an hour talking to the children and then left...no time for chit-chatting with gushy librarians...although she did tell me it was a great experience and that our library is a wonderful environment.

She didn't spend any time under the freakishly buzzing light like I did. That buzzing light. It flickers on and off at will. Buzzing loudly and surprisingly.

I did however, have a very successful class visit in which the kids all wanted to read the books I recommended and the teacher simpered at me in the nicest possible way.
This put me into a good mood for the afternoon and enabled me to do shelving.

Today I read Best Friends the newest Jacqueline Wilson book. It is about two best friends who are separated when one moves away. I think of all the Jacquie Wilson books this is the one which most closely mirrors experiences that I have had. As such it was quite absorbing and I had to read all of it as fast as I could.

You see, when I was five a family moved in down the road from us. I became fast best friends with the blonde Penny and we went to the same school and were pretty much inseperable for four years. In 1989 she moved back down to Christchurch and we stayed in touch via letter writing.

Whenever I go to Christchurch I catch up with her, and when she's in Wellington she looks me up and whenever we talk it's the same. We have so much shared experience that we just click. It's lovely. Thank goodness for old friends.

I should see if the email address I have for her still works.

Last day of the holidays

*sigh* back to work tomorrow...

Last night we saw Ong-Bak which is a Thai martial arts movie. It is very well made and funny with a lead actor who can jump over cars and make it look effortless. That's right, cars. Cars aren't small but he just leaps over 'em.

No wires, so SFX, just an awesome athlete. If you like martial arts movies (and let's face it, who doesn't?) then you have to seek this one out. If it comes on at the rialto or something I'll tell you.

Sunday slept in. Had nervous dreams about going back to work and finding systems changed and bizarre. Library had hired an 8 year old to do the shelving, etc. I am going to not have those dreams again tonight, it's too annoying.

Last movie of the festival was Tongan Ninja. Interesting counterpoint to Ong-Bak but had more in common with Shaun of the Dead. It was pretty good but not great. I thought it was funny in places, but dragged too long. Great performance from Jermaine Clement as the bad guy...great dialogue. Lee thought there were too many NZ in-jokes but I still think it's have a viable audience overseas. We'll see what happens to it I guess.

I am feeling pretty melancholy about going back to work tomorrow. I know I am lucky to be able to take time off work to see all these movies, and I am happy about that...I just wish I could do it all year.

Livejournal has gone crazy with friends blogging. Go click the link on the right that says livejournal buddies and you'll see what I mean. Yay the bloggers!

Oh and Svend was at the movie last night. He seemed to have lost a bit of cognitive ability, but was cheerful all the same. No change in his personality and he looked and smelled fine.

Tomorrow: back to our regularly scheduled programme.
