we are already here
Hee... I used to live on that bus route.
Posted by Fi at June 17, 2003 11:08 PMBugger travel! Bugger growing up for that matter!
Moon rise over the Rimutakas beats jet setting anyday. :)
What game are you playing? (asks an old gamer geek)
Posted by Siobhann at June 18, 2003 08:00 AMWhen you live in Wellington, travel seems to be a good way to remind yourself how good we've got it.
But then again I grew up overseas, so I guess I don't have that incestous, claustraphobic need to travel and do the OE thing. Of course, some people might argue I'm still on my OE.
Yeah, I like Wellington, there are sometimes when I feel like I've been smacked in the face with the sheer beauty of the place.
Posted by kim at June 18, 2003 09:51 AMHey all. I both lived on that bus route AND used to drive it back in my deep dark bus-driving past.
Would you believe that once upon a time it was a trolley route? (Kilbirnie via Roseneath to Wadestown) Yup - not only did your intrepid bus drivers have to navigate cyclists, oncoming traffic, parked cars, intersections, and right-angle turns on a steep uphill slant, we also had to cope with some of the worst wire in the city (lots of sharp corners = lots of kinks in the overhead wire = easy to lose poles). And back in those days, getting a trolley with power steering was a huge luxury. Aahhh - sometimes I miss it. (But not all that often)
Posted by Kris at June 18, 2003 03:05 PMThey should have signs on the busses. Dont stand until bus has stopped or youll end up through the windscreen... :)
Posted by H at June 18, 2003 03:16 PMYay, for non-lurkage! The Highbury bus route is my other favourite. There you are sitting in Aro Valley, looking up at the steep end-of-the-earth type hills, and suddenly a huge vehicle streaks into view around a bend and disappears behind another tree. It always makes me feel like I've just seen a skateboarding elephant zooming around on a mountainside.

Posted by carla at June 18, 2003 03:48 PMheh, am thinking maybe *drag racing* in buses... (tho maybe on a different route, like petone-wgtn)
Posted by bec at June 18, 2003 03:56 PMSiobhann, the game is Nobilis, for which see http://www.guardiansorder.com/nobilis/ and particularly the sections of the rulebook freely downloadable from that site.
Posted by Jamie at June 18, 2003 05:10 PMHeh, Carlton Gore Road if my memory is right.
And that's not a right-angle, that's two right angles (= a hairpin bend). I remember getting that bus home from town and having stunning views back across Oriental Bay towards the city lights. (One minute your back is to town, and then you're looking right at it.)
Ahh, Wellington..
Posted by Michael at June 18, 2003 06:13 PMCarlton Gore Road has the hairpin, followed by a right angle turn, followed by a right angle turn, followed by a right angle turn, and from then on it’s pretty much just standard bendy until you hit another right angle turn and move on to the descent.
From experience, the hair pin is no problem; it’s the following two right angle turns which cause problems — oncoming traffic (and houses to block visibility of same), steepness, and parked cars have caused a number of buses to stall and graunch themselves on the footpath.
Posted by Jamie at June 18, 2003 09:37 PMyup, it was the two right handers alright. and in due respect to the bus driver, she made it look *easy*. sheeesh. :) .carla
